I hear you on the "finding a theory camp" trouble. I am not sure how to narrow down who to read and who the "friends of my mind" are. It helped to have conversations with some of the student who are more advanced than myself. I just read some dissertations from some recent students whose interests seemed to relate to mine. I got some new leads from that. It basically looks like its going to take a lot of reading to find out what you are interested in reading/learning more about and what relates to your thesis/dissertations. I don't know if that helps, but its been my strategy thus far.
